Review
“Maki reminds us to change the arc of our existence by setting the bar HIGHER and demanding more from life. Read this book and reclaim what you want out of your life, instead of resigning yourself to making the best out of circumstances that only meet the status quo.” ―Richie Norton, bestselling author of The Power of Starting Something Stupid
“In her new and wonderfully insightful book, Maki Moussavi turns professional success upside down―sure, you may have passed many of the mileposts traditionally associated with ‘success,’ but by whose definition? And how does it impact your own personal happiness and fulfillment? Maki knows why many ‘high achievers’ still feel empty inside and provides a systematic, step-by-step approach to getting in touch with what you REALLY want out of life and work…and how to achieve THAT!” ―Dr Cindy McGovern, author of Every Job Is a Sales Job
“If everyone around you is convinced you have it all together, but you are not so sure you do, The High Achievers Guide is for you. From the book:
As a high achiever, you are beautifully equipped to lead a fulfilled life. But first, you have to acknowledge that what drives you may be a bit dark. The need to be validated, acknowledged, accomplished, seen, recognized, to win, etc., are drivers that come from a place of limited self-worth. You may be thinking, “Wait a minute. I’m self-confident. I know what I’m worth.” But do you really? Your self-confidence is bolstered by the validation you receive for meeting the expectations of others. Would your confidence remain intact if you didn’t receive recognition? You don’t know your value internally, so you seek to have it defined externally. As you know, these drivers will work for a while. You’ll enter the achieve/receive validation cycle and it will feed itself, all while you remain void of the knowledge of your intrinsic worth. You will make money, achieve status, accumulate material possessions, and remain unfulfilled. The tangible cannot fill the intangible hole inside of you.
As successful as you are, you can’t take your life to the next level without doing the deep work to transform the way you see yourself and raise the bar for what you expect from life. The way you live has been dictated from the outside with little to no input from you. How can you possibly expect fulfillment if what you want isn’t at the heart of all you do? Yes, it will be scary. You must have the courage to walk out of step with those who surround you. You must have the conviction that it’s worth facing the fear to live a life in which you can thrive rather than survive. Neither the courage nor the conviction will show up to support you as long as your desires remain unconsidered. This is YOUR life. Not your mom’s, dad’s, kid’s, partner’s, or friend’s. Yours.

Maki Moussavi is a corporate career veteran with a Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling who left the glory of societally-defined success to become a transformational coach and motivational speaker. Over the last several years, she has focused on personal development and how to help people create fundamental change in the pursuit of fulfillment.

She has found that high-achieving people are especially susceptible to feeling stuck and need accountability and support to make the necessary changes to lead an empowered and fulfilling life. Her ability to break down complex concepts into accessible and actionable information was the backbone of her corporate achievements and is a critical component of her coaching and thought leadership today.
Maki teaches the process she has created to jumpstart rapid and lasting transformation, using the wisdom and knowledge gained through her education, experience, and her own journey from being stuck to being aligned.

The chapter that resonated with me the most – and is worth the price of the book by itself – was the chapter called “Toxic Fumes,” which focuses on working with other people, especially leaders and bosses, who create a toxic environment. It’s as if Maki knew exactly what I was experiencing in my workplace, and I have never heard anyone describe the issue of toxicity with such clarity and dead-on detail. A few quotes that stood out:
“Toxicity can be obvious, but it can also fly under the radar, impacting you in a vague and disquieting way that you have a hard time articulating.”
“It’s like a poison that you continue to breathe as long as you tolerate interactions with people who do this to you.”
And the big one:
“To be told repeatedly that what you have seen or heard…happened another way, or that your perception of what happened is invalid wears on you, making you question yourself rather than stand firmly in your conviction that you do, indeed, know what you experienced.”
Another chapter that I needed at the time is called, “What are You Worth?” Here Maki takes a deep dive into doing what lights you up, taking care of yourself first, and the scarcity mindset. Again, she seems to know me better than I know myself sometimes.
What I appreciated most about The High Achiever’s Guide was her mentorship on every page, her direct and no-nonsense communication style, and her ability to offer solutions to the issues many high achiever’s face.
In my presentations on Working Toward Excellence, I always encourage my audiences to “stand out in a culture of fitting in.” While many people just want to fit in, belong, and do what everyone else is doing, those who work toward excellence stand out. They do things differently, they think differently, are uncommon, and don’t run with the masses. This is what Maki Moussavi and The High Achiever’s Guide offers. A different perspective, a breath of fresh air, and a mentor who truly cares.
In addition to the many thoughtful insights, Maki’s book provides tangible steps to help you put change into practice. I’m excited about what I have discovered through this process and am very thankful for Maki and her amazing book for helping me realize that I’m not alone on this journey, that a true transformation will take time and energy, but I can do this, and it is worth it – I am worth it!
Maki gets a tremendous amount of motivation, inspiration and instruction into this little gem; and her writing style is humorous and completely relatable. You will recognize yourself in her stories and feel very understood in your continual pursuit of being awesome.
